We are built with this amazing detoxification system that’s running 24/7. It works to break down the toxins we have consumed and produced into water-soluble forms, which the body can easily eliminate. We eliminate these broken-down toxins through our sweat, breath, urine and stool. The detoxification system is running 24/7 and if it were to stop, death would ensue from the toxic overload. (The system is that essential to life.)

After I give that brief description of detoxification, I usually get the following question. “So, if I have this great detox system, why are you telling me I need to do The Cleanse?”  The short answer is, the world we live in and our modern-day lifestyle. The long answer, is because within the last century, a quarter million new chemicals have been created. These chemicals are found in everything and are everywhere. We are bombarded with them. They are the additives and preservatives in our food. They are the pesticides and herbicides sprayed on our food, and in the feed of our livestock. They are in our beauty supplies, our cosmetics and body care products. They are in our cleaning products, in our homes and offices, in the paint on the walls and the flooring, carpet and furniture. At this point they are also in our water supply, that we drink and bathe in as well as in our air. There is Stress and the toxins that are produced by our body, when we are under stress and when we have negative thoughts and emotions. So yes, we have a great, efficient detoxification system already built into us. However, it was not designed for the toxic load that we are under today.

The next question I get is. “I only eat organic and I changed all my personal care and cleaning products to green ones, so do I still need to do The Cleanse?”  Again, my answer is yes. The process of toxic overload is a cumulative effect over time. Even if you were doing everything “right”, we are still not able to control enough of the toxins we consume and produce to make a large enough difference. Another way to look at it, is that we are exposed to as many toxins in one month, then our grandparents were exposed to in their entire lifetime!

Another important factor to consider is that nutrients are needed to help process the toxins, and turn them into that water soluble state and flush them out of our bodies. Unfortunately, most of the food we are consuming, even if they were not processed and organic, whole foods, they do not contain enough of the nutrients to support our body detoxifying this current toxic level.

As I mentioned previously, this process is cumulative, a slow building, chronic process that is very much like how patient’s symptoms present themselves. Unless there’s a huge toxic event, for most people the symptoms they have are slow building. People don’t even realize how bad things have gotten because it’s been such a gradual process.  Here is a list of some the symptoms that our patients have that are correlated to an elevated toxic load.

  • Allergies and Asthma
  • Blood sugar issues such as craving sugar, brain fog
  • Cardiovascular issues such as high cholesterol
  • Digestive complaints such as bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation
  • Frequent colds and Sinus Infections,
  • Headaches
  • Hormone Imbalance which often presents itself as PMS or perimenopausal symptoms, hot flashes, weight gain or fertility issues.
  • Mood complaints such as depression, anxiety, anger and irritability
  • Muscle and Joint pain
  • Rashes

The Short Answer is Yes, It’s Time to Cleanse!
